Jade Carson used to be one of the best of the vampire
assassins; now she is what she used to hunt and more. She is also half
goddess due to a god’s curiosity about the eroticism of a vampire’s
bite. She is protected by an indestructible sword.
Aeron Blake is a Dark Elf, and one of the most feared
assassins ever. He needs Jade’s help to find the Chameleon, a creature
who can shift into anything. The creature has attacked Aeron’s partner
and kidnapped his boss’s daughter.
The Chameleon is terrorizing the city and has set his
sights on Jade. The half vampire/half goddess has untested and possibly
limitless powers and he wants a taste. Aeron is charged with
destroying the creature and he needs Jade’s help. The chemistry between
the two is explosive and immediate.
I really loved this story. The starting scene is
exciting and violent, and the rest of the story is fascinating. Jade
thinks she is a loner, but she collects a large and interesting
assortment of friends and dependents as the story progresses. The
settings are wonderful, moving from a gritty urban environment to the
wildly exotic land of the fae. The author has left a few loose ends,
which I am hoping will lead to at least one more book in what looks to
be an involving and exciting series.
MuseItUp's newest cover artist, Kaytalin Platt, came up with three different covers based on my description and excerpts. I really liked two of them for their simplicity and also artistic beauty. One had a couple of feathers falling down, the other had a couple in silhouette kissing. My mother loved the feathers, I liked the couple. So I thought, why not combine the two? Luckily for me Kaytalin went along with it and hence the cover for Summoning Darkness was born.
Harlequin are transitioning their Nocturne Bites line to Nocturne Cravings. The interesting thing about this for me is the word count. Bites were always limited to about 15K. Cravings can reach 25K. As I can't seem to write a short story to save myself, I never managed to get together anything to submit to Bites. But 25K? that's doable.

Here are the guidelines:

Length: 15,000–25,000 words
Senior Executive Editor: Tara Gavin
Associate Senior Editor: Ann Leslie Tuttle
Harlequin Nocturne is looking to acquire bold, exciting, erotic paranormal romance short stories for its eBook program, Nocturne Cravings. These stories should be fast-paced paranormals with strong erotic fantasy and danger elements. Authors should feel comfortable exploring any and all sexual scenarios and shouldn't shy away from graphically sensual situations. In fact, the short stories should contain many erotic scenes that compel and bind the characters together. Strong, emotional characters that grab the readers imagination are also essential.
We are looking for stories of vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, psychic powers, etc. set in contemporary times. Stories should deliver a dark, highly sensual read that will entertain readers and take them from everyday life into an atmospheric, complex world filled with characters struggling with life-and-death issues. A strong alpha hero is of utmost importance—he should be powerful, mysterious and totally attractive to the heroine. While action-packed and mission-oriented, the scope of these stories should be more contained, with additional focus placed on character development and erotic situations.
All stories should be capable of standing alone; all loose ends need to be tied up, and the relationship between hero and heroine should resolve itself in a satisfying manner.
For published authors, this line is a great way to explore more erotic scenarios and different fantasy elements. Unpublished authors are welcome as well.
Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow standard formatting guidelines and should be double-spaced and typed in a clear, legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should appear as a header or footer on each page.Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-62554632103571736152011-03-31T22:22:00.000-07:002011-04-01T12:42:38.848-07:00New Release ContestI'm celebrating the release of my Urban Fantasy novel, the Chameleon's Bite, with a contest!

Jade might find love in the arms of the mysterious elf. All she has to do it survive his deadly elf blades first.Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-9018854075245215612010-11-06T22:24:00.000-07:002010-11-06T22:24:38.421-07:00New ContractsWell, I have some good news. MuseItUp Publishing have offered me a contract for Summoning Darkness. This is a dramatic urban fantasy story featuring gypsy magic, werewolves, a greek goddess, a mad scientist and much more. It's scheduled for release August 2011. That's about the time my first novel, Blood Talisman goes to print!

Also, my horror flash, Kiss the Bride, was accepted by Pill Hill Press for inclusion in one of their horror anthos. I'm using my maiden name, Erika Millard, for this because it's horror and very different from my previously pubbed writing. I plan to write more horror and hope (cross fingers tight) to get some published one day! My dad loved horror and sci fi, so I think it would be fitting to use his sirname.

What else? Haven't heard back about Rise Above, the horror short I subbed to the Zombie Feed, an imprint of Apex. They state that anyone who hasn't recieved a rejection is being held for a final round of judging. So, I'm in 'zombie holding'. I would love to be accepted, but don't dare to hope. I can imagine there are hundreds of submissions by established zombie authors. Still, no news is good news :)Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-11171193488725294352010-06-27T14:28:00.001-07:002010-06-27T14:28:35.541-07:00Meet Jade Carver of The Chameleon's Bite

Hello, I’m Jade Carver; former member of the Paranormal Assassins’ Guild, part goddess, part vampire and all round nice girl. I’m currently being pursued by a homicidal Chameleon that’s going around biting paranormals in order to consume their power. Being able to melt into the surroundings, the Chameleon can hide pretty much anywhere. He’s given me a fright on more than one occasion, rising up out of the ground and appearing right in the middle of my living room. I know! Scary. I do have a secret weapon, however, in the form of an indestructible sword. Sounds good doesn’t it? And it is. It’s sharp and can cut through anything and, well, it can’t be destroyed. It’s great. When it shows up, that is. There have been many occasions when I’ve found myself reaching for my sword and coming up with nothing but air. Other times it appears when I really don’t want it to. The name says it all; Skraela Svero, or Screaming Sword. I know. Why couldn’t I have a weapon named Sweetly Singing Sword instead?

Mind you, I’ve been to some interesting places lately. Like Changeling City. Never heard of it? Neither had I. It’s a parallel city magically created by Changeling fairies. It’s become a place for the paranormal outlaws of the world to hide. It can be dangerous and magical, the perfect place for a psychotic Chameleon to hide. This is where I met Grand Master Vampire Hugo Vine, a vampire for whom even Master Vampires are slaves and mere vampires like me are cattle. For some reason this scary vamp has taken a liking to me.

I’ve also been to the Fairy Wildes; this is where the really bad fairies are sent for all eternity. I met a couple of Fire Dryads – these are basically tree fairies that can set an entire forest on fire. They like to burn people.

I’ve met some other . . . interesting people too. I’ve recently acquired a couple of houseguests: a newly turned pair of werewolves. Apart from ruining the furniture they could get me in a lot of trouble with my landlord. There’s also the witch Lucretia. She started out as a black witch but a run in with my sword kind of changed her. She’s a white witch now, though some part of her former self remains. I don’t entirely trust her.

Last but not least, there’s Dark-Elf assassin, Aeron Blake. I’m not sure how I feel about him. He’s tall and dark, with the greenest eyes you’ve ever seen and a six pack to die for . . . well you get the picture. He’s perfect for me. There’s just one slight problem. He was sent by the Paranormal Assassins’ Guild to kill me. Let’s face it. If I had a Facebook page my relationship status would read ‘it’s complicated’.

You’ll find my story in Erika Gilbert’s novel, The Chameleon’s Bite, coming out in 2011. Let’s hope she allows me to defeat the Chameleon. You never know, I might even find true love.Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-30794851093239905942010-05-26T00:56:00.000-07:002010-05-26T00:56:35.351-07:00New ContractI did it! Oops. I've got a few stories in the pipe line. 3 WIPs no less. Demon Blade is an adult paranormal about a fiesty chick with a sword that has a mind of its own. Summoning Darkness is a young adult novel involving a Greek goddess, some demons and angels and the worst kind of baddie - a teen girl who wants to be popular and will do anything to get there - including kill anyone who gets in her way. My third WIP is a complete adult novel that I'm changing into a Young Adult book. Oh yes, and the editor I subbed a sci-fi short to suggested I turn it into a full length novel, but that's on the back burner.Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-80202491983060097562009-08-28T14:09:00.000-07:002009-08-28T14:14:04.570-07:00Review of my bookHere's the review of Blood Talisman, in full.

BLOOD TALISMAN

ERIKA GILBERT

ISBN: 978-1-60592-045-0July 2009
Noble Romance Publishing www.nobleromance.comE-book$5.95182 pagesParanormal

RomanceRating: 5 Cups

Helene Sharp is a battle mage; she goes out and chases down rogue paranormals. She is not supposed to do any work without the mage council's authorization. When she finds her ex-lover and master vampire Lee Corady is in trouble, she soon goes behind the council's back to help.

Brett Corady is a skinwalker; he can ‘move-into’ other peoples bodies and totally control them. He is also the brother of the master vampire. Sincd he was once a vampire himself, he has a double loyalty to Lee. When a witch takes control of Lee and his vampires, using Lee’s blood Brett works with Helene to try and save them all.

Brett and Helene have to work to find out how to save Lee and his vampires, while keeping Helene alive because it seems the witch wants her dead. Lee is a good master and is fighting the witch with all his power. Between them, the three make a remarkable group. Meanwhile the tension building between them is more than that of co-workers, and Brett’s ability to enter Helene and control her movements proves to be an interesting hobby.

Ms. Gilbert has produced a novel with a new level of paranormal romance. The ability of her skinwalkers is amazing and opens a whole new area. Helene is a strong and fascinating character. She compliments Brett’s playful nature. They are both in total contrast to Lee’s domineering master vampire approach to life. As a reviewer my only question is do they find a mate for Lee?

Hollie Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & MoreErika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-80576476468037331092009-08-21T21:21:00.000-07:002009-08-21T21:49:26.093-07:00My Cups Runeth OverHey, guess what? Coffee Time Romance reviewed my novel, Blood Talisman, and gave it 5 out of 5 cups! It's my first review so I'm stoked.

//www.coffeetimeromance.com/BookReviews/bloodtalisman.htmlErika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-60657995282262944122009-07-09T19:39:00.001-07:002009-07-09T19:44:53.604-07:00I went into the local super market and noticed something surprising on the front page of the newspaper - my face! It gave me such a shock. I spent the rest of the time thinking everyone would recognise me. It was a mini version of what celebrities must feel liek all the time and when my husband showed my face to the check out girl I wanted to run away and hide!

Also, my bus driver recognised me! So did the lady at the dairy. So I am famous - along my bus route anyway.

Here's the link to the article - it's about my book.

www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/entertainment/book-reviews/2575077/Virtually-publishedErika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-38466173501172322752009-07-06T12:33:00.000-07:002009-07-06T18:33:36.840-07:00A word about poetryIt happened almost by accident. I was looking for short story competitions to enter when I stumbled across the New Zealand Poetry Societies International Haiku Competition. I thought OK, why not? So I went and had a look at the examples of past winners and good poems on their website.

I spent a few hours writing, came up with a dozen or so poems sent in half of them and promptly forgot all about it. A few months later I got a phone call to say I'd won! Apparently there were over 700 entries from around the world.

Poetry has changed a lot since I was at school. Take the poem I wrote when I was ten years' old:

A pair of eyes watch
Hidden with fear they follow
They are my scared eyes.

This poem follows the traditional western syllable format 5/7/5

These days that's a no no, apparently. You aren't supposed to have any thes, as or ins etc.

A more modern version of this poem might be:

Eyes watch
Hidden with fear
My scared eyes.

Personally I prefer the one I wrote when I was ten. It's more fun trying to restrict your words to a particular word count, I find.

Here's a link to the NZPS webpage:
www.poetrysociety.org.nz/node/114Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-44444897081019765682009-07-03T21:44:00.000-07:002009-07-06T13:41:56.292-07:00IntroducingHello, I'm Erika Gilbert, paranormal romance author, mild-mannered library assistant with a psychology degree, accidental poet and most importantly mother to a very intelligent, beautiful boy who is a joy to both parents.

I started writing seriously after the birth of my son over five years' ago. Well, after the why-won't-he-stop-crying-and-just-sleep? stage - which lasted eight months.

I was born in Kent, England but I don't remember much because by the age of two I was on my way to Australia. I stayed there just long enough to cuddle some koalas, meet a snake in the bathtub, and find a family of red backs under a log. Then, when I was four I came to New Zealand. I bunny-hopped to a few cities (there's more than a drop of gypsy blood in my family) before coming to a stop in Nelson for the furthering of my education at a prestigious girl's school. Courtney Love attended the same school, apparently. so I can't quite follow my parents logic.

My father, Tom Millard, died before he was able to realize his dream of being published. I hope he's proud.

If you like vampires, skin-walkers, witches and a touch of druid magic then check out my book here: http://www.nobleromance.com/ItemDisplay.aspx?i=53

I hope you enjoy it.
Erika.Erika Gilberthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08491559442753391606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679156360940696699.post-34982506599240710702009-06-28T16:14:00.000-07:002009-06-28T16:15:02.135-07:00WritingOne more day!!!
